"We recorded "On the Lam" during the sessions for our forthcoming LP, Keep It in the Dark, which were engineered by Colin Althaus at Earth Analog in June of 2014. It's a somewhat anomalous track, which didn't neatly fit into the album, and I'm glad we're getting to release it here. Elizabeth wrote it back to the late 1990s, when she and I were in Villacoula (with Victor Cortez on drums, who also deserves some songwriting credit). The song lived on after Villacoula--Elizabeth kept strumming it around the house, and Motes just started messing around with it at practice. We tweaked the earlier arrangement quite a bit, Matt Cohn added his unique rhythmic slant, and now it's fully a Motes song. We played it live at our second show in November 2011, and began sometimes closing our sets with it. After more than one of our Mike N Molly's sets, Soundman Bob put the Breeders on afterward. Maybe it does have kind of a Breeders vibe, or maybe Bob just likes the Breeders.

"keep it in the dark" feels like summer storm music: it swirls and comes in torrents but it cools your skin with burst of calm. i don't know how they balance the dichotomy so easily, but they do. the pitterpatter of accidentals in "fools"'s guitar line, the gentle unison vocals of "we collide", the churning sea of "see what happens"- it all melds into something as rousing as it is calming.
