about
"This was the demo of Leaving Ground that I initially sent the band when we were writing for Mt Fuji [in Blue]. I wanted to write something a little more basic, a little more song oriented than I usually do. I'll typically try to throw in some mathy odd-time stuff to everything I write (like our song Monkey for instance), but this time I wanted to stick more to a shoegaze type formula with simpler chords, lofty vocals, and lots of reverb and delay effects. If I remember correctly my real goal was to "create something I could play drunk easily". Classy shit right? Anyways, I started out with a basic drum loop that was probably a little too hard hitting to be considered shoegazey, but I feel like it really held the song together. If you listen it's just the same loop over and over the whole song. The chords are setup to play off resolving to a G chord which provides a nice tension, especially when first entering the bridge of the song where you get that big held G chord and a nice feeling of resolution. It then trap doors right into Minor world again via the scuzzy bass riff which felt cool to me. Nothing groundbreaking here, all tried and true rock n roll tricks but it's all about bringing the right emotions out. I sort of just David Lee Roth'd the lyrics.. I'm no poet. If you can't figure out what the lyrics are about then I can't help you... it's partly intentionally campy. I also really dug the fadey thing I did at the very end. Overall this is one of my favorite tracks I've ever written. Hope you all enjoy it!" Colin Larson of Withershins on the demo recording of "Leaving Ground"

"keep it in the dark" feels like summer storm music: it swirls and comes in torrents but it cools your skin with burst of calm. i don't know how they balance the dichotomy so easily, but they do. the pitterpatter of accidentals in "fools"'s guitar line, the gentle unison vocals of "we collide", the churning sea of "see what happens"- it all melds into something as rousing as it is calming.
