"keep it in the dark" feels like summer storm music: it swirls and comes in torrents but it cools your skin with burst of calm. i don't know how they balance the dichotomy so easily, but they do. the pitterpatter of accidentals in "fools"'s guitar line, the gentle unison vocals of "we collide", the churning sea of "see what happens"- it all melds into something as rousing as it is calming. this album burns through like a prairie fire - once it begins, you can do nothing to stop it save dig the trenches that define the beginning and the end of the forest. the vocals ring out and stab like the bastard child of a snarling david yow and a contemplating michael stipe: the instrumentation is big and bold, equal measures desperation and bravado. from the first bombastic cymbal crash of "in love. in glasgow" to the galloping last stand of the title track, this record sticks to your bones.
